This week, J.C. Newman Cigar Co. is shipping the last release of its unique Yagua cigars for 2024. Nearly 1,850 boxes are being sent to around 500 premium cigar retailers across 46 states.
Yagua, which has developed a dedicated following, is inspired by traditional farm-rolled cigars from Cuba in the 1940s. Lazaro Lopez, general manager at J.C. Newman’s PENSA factory in Nicaragua, shared that his grandfather would roll cigars from fresh tobacco leaves without molds, tying them together with leaves from the Cuban royal palm, or “yagua.”
Each Yagua bundle of 20 cigars is wrapped in a palm leaf immediately after rolling and aged for a full year, using under-fermented Connecticut Broadleaf wrappers and a unique filler blend. Drew Newman, a fourth-generation owner, explains, “Yagua is challenging to make, but the result is a one-of-a-kind cigar experience.”
